While sailing Saturday both the Loran on Ambuscade and a hand held GPS one of the crew had, regestered 6.8 knots. This happened a few times over a 6 hour time fame.
I believe the hull speed for a 28 foot CD was 6.3knots. Is this possible, or was it equipment error?

Re: hull speed
The GPS records speed over land. If you were in a following current, you could exceed hull speed over land while still being below it relative to the water.

Re: hull speed
Hi Tom,
Hull speed is not a limitation but simply a benchmark used by yacht designers to define wavemaking resistance -- a point on a curve. Boats routinely exceed their hull speeds.
Hope this helps,

Re: hull speed
Tom:
Andy is correct. Also remember that as the boat heels over, the waterline increases. There is also a hull coeffencient(sp?) that needs to be used in the formula.

Re: hull speed
Tom,
A bunch of us will be attending the CDSOA General Meeting in Oriental, NC in November, Andy included. Don't worry, there are some fine restaurants in Oriental.
See you in November.
