Looking for a Cape Dory 36 Cutter Model or Painting

Post by Jeff Porter »

My Dad is a Cape Dory 36 Cutter rig owner and his 60th b-day is coming up. As crew we thought it would be a great gift to find a model of his boat or find someone that can do an artistic painting of it. Alas, we are only familiar with painting boat bottoms. Any help or reccomendations would be very appreciated.

Just a suggestion....he already has the factory provided half hull model for the boat?

If not, you might want to consider it. For a period of time, it was provided with every CD built. The original manufacturer is listed on the site main page under CD equipment suppliers.

Jeff,

If you're having a problem finding the information regarding the half hull model manufacturer's info posted on this site, here it is:

"...The Scale Model Company: Remember those half hull models which came with every new Cape Dory? The folks who supplied Cape Dory are still in business at: 1228 W. Augusta Blvd., Unit 1, Chicago, IL 60622, (312) 421-9323, fax (312) 421-0993. They do half-hulls for most Cape Dory sailboats, and many of the powerboats. Custom models are also available...."

Jeff,

Fraley Sailing Art, Inc. makes hand-crafted scale replica half hulls or full hulls with mast and rigging. The full hulls with mast and rigging are quite expensive ($3000), but, the half hulls are considerably less. See there web site at www.boatfacts.com/fraleyart

Well, maybe a painting would be very nice. I used to see paintings which were done from photos, etc. But for the love of me, I can not remember a single name for you. But I bet he would really like that.

I just remembered I may have seen such advertisements for paintings made for ones boat in the classified section of either Sail or Cruising World magazine. Suggest you take a look at these at your magazine stand.

Try this website:

<a href="http://www.boatowners.com/welcome.htm">Boat Owners World</a>

Click on Paintings/Ship Models. This will bring up a list of artists on the left side of the page. You can check out each one and see samples of their work and pricing. Most can take on a project from a photograph.

If you want to go with a painting, there is an artist in Rhode Island that does paintings from photographs. What is unique is that she paints on any NOAA chart of your choice. You pick a chart of your sailing area and she will do 2 scenes, perhaps a lighthouse and your boat under full sail heading for your harbor. She uses water colors so the grid and chart markings show through. I've seen her work at boat shows and she is really good. The cost, as I recall is about $250 - $300, unframed, and well worth it. I don't have the information to contact her close at hand, but if you are interested I'm sure I can find it for you -- just let me know if you want me to look for it.
