I had a chance today to see what my Typhoon Weekender "Regalo" can do. The report was for a small craft warning, with winds 20-25 kts. I hoisted both sails in the canal which is protected, but as soon as I reached the bay the winds were a steady 15-17 kts, and I was overpowered. I quickly reefed the main, but still found the boat difficult to control in gusts to 20 kts. I then dropped the jib, and the boat settled down nicely. Very easy to control, with not much heel. I continued on a reach with winds 17-20 kts, with frquent gusts to 26kts. I turned to weather to go under a bridge, and I was surprised how well she pointed. Got wet, but made slow if steady progress on a beat, and I think I was bucking a current. I then turned to a broad reach back. Sailing under reefed main alone I think the boat would have done well in winds to 30 kts, especially with crew. Three cheers for Carl Alberg! What a great little boat!

Sailing a Typhoon in Force 5

Re: Sailing a Typhoon in Force 5
I agree with you on what a wounderful boat it is. Saturday after work I headed for the marina to piddle with the boat for a while, when I got down there my racer neghiorbor where aboard there boat talking about going out but the wind was a bit high for them in there boat so i offered to go out in my typhoon. They somewhat hesitantly agreed since it was blowing 20 kts. with gust around 30, but the seas where small, about 4 - 5 ft whith the occasional rouge wave being higher. My crew got a little lerry when I brought up the asymetrical and attacted the turttle to the bow pulpit. We then reefed the main and put up the jib and we were off. When we cleared the protection of the channel and poweredd into the open water we had green water over the bow a few times, but that was because i couldn't tae the waves on the right angle and still stay in the channel and stay off the rocks. Once clear f the channel we went close hulled and my little girl settled down immediately and sliced through the seas with noew problem. This standing, it waws a very, very wet ride, but what fun we had. About ten miles out we set the shoot in about 22 kts. and had some fun surfing. When we got back into the marine aand we all sat down for a beer my racer friends all proclaimed my boat to be the best they had ever sailed on.
