Oil or varnish for interior of CD22

Post by Bill Coogan »

The ash ceiling on the interior of my CD22 is so dry that it makes me shiver to touch it! Any suggestions on what to apply to it? Should I try an oil such as Deks Olje, or should I varnish it? I would like to retain the light color, by the way.

We just use Liquid Gold (from the grocery store) for the interior wood. We apply it once or twice a year and it really makes the wood look nice.

I would recommend varnishing the interior. Because the interior does not get direct sunlight in it, the varnish will hold up for years and you will never have to re-do it again, except for high usage areas and nicks and dings. I varnished the interior of my CD25 in 1984 and have not had to redo it since. The varnished wood is also very easy to clean and helps keep mildew away (and it looks beautiful). I don't have ash in the CD25, but, because ash is a light wood, I think it would remain light after varnishing. Apply a minimum of three coats. Four coats will fill in the grain better, though.

Varnish is more work to apply initially than other products, but, it will save you time in the long run.

BTW, the teak toerail, cabin top rails and comings look really superb when varnished. Exterior wood will require a yearly maintenance coat, though.

Bill,

I use Liquid Gold on all of the interior teak and ash in our CD32. I spray it directly on the wood and rub, rub, rub. It looks great.

I'll add my experience as well.......I added the ash ceilings to my CD26 in 86. The CD factory gave me the name of their supplier in RI. The ash slats were all premilled, etc. Cost me about $160 for the entire interior of the boat. But to your question........I did what the factory was doing at the time. I applied polyurethane and it still looks like new. It, of course, remains light in color. Standard three coats is enough.
