Anyone add a 12V sys to their Ty?

Post by Sean »

I am contemplating adding a 12v system to our Ty. Has anyone out there done this before and if so, could you briefly go over how you did it? Where did you locate the battery, did you use a circut panel, etc.... TIA

I placed the battery inside just under the companionway. Using a Perko panel (this was around 1981; there are better ones today, probably) mounted to a home made teak frame attached to the stbd cabin aft, it was then wired to: Perko port and starboard bow lights mounted on teak blocks so they would be above the toe rail, and a white stern light similarly mounted on the aft coaming. I also had a fixed VHF wired to the panel, along with a simple interior light. As I recall, the wiring for the most part could be led inside the liner.
Good luck. And, use good stuff, as it will pay off in service to you. There are several good books on wiring if you need help with the diagram, etc.

How dod you recharge? Was it connected to an alternator on the outboard? Solar? Carry-on?

Thanks,

Our gel battery is located forward of the space where we keep the portipot. Access is via the hatchboard under the V berth. The 3 circuit panel is located on the starboard mast support knee. Cabin lights, running lights and anchor light. The panel has a cigarette plug-in also.

Your a 12v power arrangement sounds interesting. Could you expand maybe with plan drawings and/or pix of you installations to download or regular mail. I like the idea for a plug lacation for other equipment. Also you have an CAPE DORY "after market" TY cabin compression knee installation, it appears. Several of us on the net are looking for any data, pixs, plans and/or draws, etc in an attempt to reconstruct these support devices. Any help in that area would help to.. Thanks in advance.

With an automotive battery charger, usually by removing the battery. I had a Seagull w/no alternator, so engine charging wasn't an option.

Since we're on the subject (12V system for a ty) does anyone use a small 12v battery like found in wheel chairs, alarm backups, etc. I,m interested in one because of their light weight, usually less than 30lbs and compact size. The usual 60lb+ starter/deep cell marine batteries seem to be over-kill in terms of electric needs and for installing in weight sensitive tys.
With little amp hr needed- for only running/nav lights, auto-bilge pump, interior lights, vhf radio, etc.- I have seen lightweight gel cell batteries with 24 am hrs. My questions: am I correct in assuming 24 amp hrs is enough for such a spartan need of electricity and if so, any one know of manufacturers/suppliers. (I've done searches but without much results.)

BTW charging can be done with a small solar panel and a small trickle charger (if there is onshore power in your marina) like ones made for automobiles that bolt to inside of the hood of the vehicle.

Thanks,
Bill

I use an alarm backup 12v battery which has a 12 amp/hr rating which is plenty of power for night sailing and an anchor light. I have mounted it in a dry box that I purchaced from West Marine. I put in a fused circuit with a polarized plug for my running lights and solar charger and a cigarette lighter plug for my GPS and cell phone. It stores easily under the cockpit I've been very happy with its service.

Bob,
You describe the type of battery I'm looking for. Can you give the manufacturer and where one might locate a supplier?
thnaks,
Bill

Bill,
I bought the battery at a battery speciality store which sells only batteries. I don't remember the manufacturer, it is on the boat, but I think that it is Guardian. It is a sealed wet cell lead acid battery about two inches thick by 8inches long by about 4 inches high.

Hi Les,
I will be glad to send you a schematic of the electrical setup on our boat. The panel is manufactured by Seadog and is listed as item # 2200042 in the BoatUS catalog. As for the support knees, I can take some photos and measurments and send those along, too. Just send a mailing address to my e-mail and I'll get the info to you. Have you checked to see if Robinhood Marine or someone has the molds for the supports?
Cheers,
Robert
