To all who responded to my inquiry about a wasted Yanmar,
Thanks for the responses. Since my surveyor insists the engine is not worth a re-build, I think Clay's advise of replacing it with a 2GM 18 horse engine is the right way to go assuming the owner comes down in price.
Begging your patience, where would one find the 2GM engines. Who would be able to install it in the boat? and or course the big question, how much would this replacement cost????
Thanks again everyone,
Peter

Where are you located? There are Yanmar dealers everywhere, and most can do installs. I am near Newport, R.I. so would use Oldport Marine...very good, but expensive. I think you will be spending around $9,000 total for the replacement, $6,500 for the engine and $2,500 for labor and other stuff....just an estimate. Can vary a lot depending on how difficult it is to make the fit. You can do it yourself if you have the time and ability, but this is not easy work...I have a friend who did it, and it came out well, but he's a hell of a lot better mechanic than I'll ever be. Also, while having this done, it might be worth doing the cutlass bearing, stuffing box, etc. etc. at the same time, which can add some cost. Also, job can take a week or more....Hope this helps.

Re: Yanmar replacement
Peter, If you shopping for a new engine You should seriously look into the Beta-Marine 722B engine(20hp) with the Hurth v-drive.
Kubota block marinized in England by Beta. I just installed one myself in my cd 30. wonderful engine easy install.
You should call Stanley Feigenbaum out of North Carolina www.betamarinec.com 1*800*682*8003 These are truly well marinized engines. Ben

I agree with Ben regarding the Beta. In fact, as Catherine sent you info on others such as Volvo and Westerbeke, you should comparison shop with them also. All of these products have pros and cons, and the previous posts talk about this extensively. Basically, all are good engines. Have heard good stuff about the Beta...might be able to save some $$ on this. The Volvos are expensive, especially parts, but are real solid and run smooth and quietly. The Westerbekes are smooth and quiet also. The Yanmars tend to be a bit louder and rougher, but are very reliable, easy to work on, and parts are cheaper and readily available. These are just some basics that I have learned. Best of luck!!
