Has anyone ever used......
Captains Commanding,
Hanalei's new miter cut roller furling jib will arrive from Mack Sails next week. I am considering replacing the jib halyard. The question is, "Has anyone ever attached the jib halyard to the jib using a half-hitch seized to a shackle?" This means no splice! The idea is to allow full haul of the jib without the possibility of the splice jamming in the mast head sheaves. I've seen it done on a racer in the next slip to Hanalei. Looked like a neat idea. Oh, what shackle would you use for a jib halyard?.....your comments, Sirs...............

Re: Has anyone ever used......
I don't use a shackle. Just a bowline. I'd avoid a half-hitch in such situations.

Re: Has anyone ever used......CHAIN.....
Captain Stump,
It is my esteemed opinon that 3/4 CHAIN would do well as the jib halyard on Hanalei, this would prevent any halyard failures, as experienced by SOME captains last year..... What say you LEO ?

Honorable Captains
I would like to second Captain Hientz's excellent idea!!! I would even bet he (Capt Hientz) has some left over (which might be had cheap) after securing his spinnaker to the foredeck.

Re: Has anyone ever used......
Dave,
If you're not going to retire the old halyard as a spare, just use the old shackle.
My old halyards were so bad I threw them out -- kept both shackles though. They were still good.

Re: Yes, I plan to do that, but.....
Cathy,
Yes, I will probably reuse the old shackle. The real question is the use of a half hitch that is seized to secure the shackle to the halyard, instead of a buried splice? It really made a nice neat looking way to do it....I just wondered if anyone else had done it....

Re: How about a bowline?
Dave,
I don't know that I'd trust a half-hitch for that application -- seized or not. How about a bowline, the tail of the bowline can be seized as well. I use a bowline for my staysail club topping lift.

Re: Has anyone ever used......
Dave,
Isn't there a type of eye splice that can be accomplished in low-stretch halyard line that uses a long taper and therefore less likely to bind in a sheave? I suggest this because I am led to believe that knots reduce the breaking strength of line whereas the eye splice gets you pretty close to 100%. (Not that you'd ever need close to 100% on that type of line, but just to be careful)......

What do you think of the jib? Are you pleased? Did it fit right? What percent of the fore triangle did you end up with?

Re: Hey, Bill ? ? ?
Capt Stump,
Nice Sail! I got a 135, pretty much duplicated the sail that came to me with the boat. Can't say enough good about the construction quality, it fit first time, every time, truly handcrafted in the best sense. Sure there are plenty of lofts locally, but after talking with them a few times on the phone, they just seemed right. (And I got their Mack Pack for the main as well, kind of a "Stack Pack lite," with a fraction of the cost).
With the foam luff it performs as well as can be expected while reefed. I have found that it holds a pretty nice shape at most reefing levels, despite the design-specific drawbacks of roller-reefing. I had it made with a Sunbrella brown cover, it looks nice with the brown sail cover and dodger.
I keep meaning to mark the furling line with reefing points that seem to work best in different conditions and points of sail, but I'm always having too much fun out there to remember to make a mark after tweaking!
Hope you enjoy Hanalei's new sail,
Bill Goldsmith
