CD 28 Powerboat Engine Smoking

Post by Jeff Howlett »

I'm looking at a 1987 Cape Dory 28 Sailboat with the original 200 hp, 6 cyl, Volvo. When it first starts up and until it gets warm it blows some grey smoke out the exhaust. The owner tells me that this is normal for 1987 and earlier and that Volvo fixed this problem in 1988 and later models. Anyone have any experience here. A little more smoke than I would expect. This boat is beautifully maintained and he says he had the injectors tested and that they are working correctly. Also anyone know the expected price range for these. This one has a hard top and is well maintained. Price around $50,000. Not cheap but about right is what I am thinking. Thanks.

Regarding price, I tried looking up that boat on www.BUCVALUE.com, but they have no CD 28 with a 200 hp Volvo. Generally that's a good site for pricing used boats.

Good luck,

Jeff:

I recently purchased a 1991 CD28 flybridge. The engine is the updated TAMD41B which was supposed to smoke less. However, I'm seeing quite a bit of gray smoke above 3000 RPM. My mechanic (who only supports Volvos and is highly regarded) said this is not unusual. He adjusted the valves which helped a bit and dramatically improved fuel consumption. He's going to check the injectors and compression to be sure we don't have a weak cylinder. On the 41A, you should have a smoke reduction valve right by the exhaust elbow. You should hear a loud click when you turn on the key. However, many of these were removed from the engines over time. I have no idea why.

I have tremendous faith in my mechanic when he says these engines always smoked and not to worry about it. I just have to clean the dinghy (on davits) and the transom every weekend. In my opinion, it's not a bad price to pay for the fuel economy and performance of this engine.

Regarding the price, It sounds very reasonable to me. There is a 1989 CD28 hardtop for sale in St. Michaels, MD (you can see it on yachtworld.com). She has over 4000 hours on the engine, needs to have the decks repainted, and all the interior wood refinished. They are asking $79K. Before I found mine, I offered him $48K. He was not pleased.

Best of luck in your search.

Sincerely,
