Just purchased an '83 CD22D. Has the 1GM Yanmar engine. Seems to have about 1/16-1/8" play at end of prop shaft. Does this sound like the cutless bearing needs to be replaced soon? Prop shaft is bronze--don't know if it is scored or not--should the shaft be replaced with stainless steel when bearing is changed whether or not the bronze shaft is scored? Has anyone replaced the cutless bearing themselves or is this best left up to the boatyard? Any special tools required if I decide to do this myself? Procedure? Thanks.

Cutless Bearing on CD22D

Jim:
There's a lot in the archives about replacing cutless bearings. If you do a search you'll find lots of advice. I replaced mine, it wasn't too tough. I would guess anyone with reasonable mechanical skills can tackle the job.
You may also want to look at the Bristol Bronze comments in the archives about underwater stainless steel applications before you replace the bronze shaft with a stainless one.
Good Luck,

excessive. I'd check on a couple of other things:
Engine mounts: I found that a couple of my CD22D mounts were loose
Shaft Coupling: Make sure that all bolts are there and tight.
I'd also check the stuffing box for tightness and replace the packing
if possible.
