Seeking suggestions/TY Weekender

Post by Stuart Waugh »

Trying to improve the performance of my Typhoon Weekender. Sailed the boat only occasionally over last several summers. Seems to me the main "lifts" the boom. The main on the boat is old, maybe an original. I'm looking to replace it (P 22.0'; E 8'9"). The boom vang was broken when I bought the boat; I need to find someone in the East-end of Long Island who could replace it. It really seems like the main/boom could use a traveller system but you know there no place on the Weekender to install one. Really appreciate any suggestions/recommendations.

West Marine carries a small Boom Vang suitable for a Typhoon and it's fairly easy to install. I Installed my traveller directly in place of the factory blocks, though I might add that I have rarely needed or even used it in any position other than center. The Boom Vang, a good purchase for your outhaul and a Loose Footed Main will do wonders for your performance. Good Sailing

Stuart-A boom-vang will help flatten the main when sailing off the wind-an easy and effective upgrade. New sails make a big difference. A loose footed main gives some more control also. A clean bottom always helps.
My vang is from West Marine-though I think one with more advantage would be easier and more precise to adjust.

Vang Advantage

Post by Ken Coit »

Mike,

Unless my eyeballs and physics lessons are finally failing me, I think you can gain another 33% advantage from your vang by simply turning it around with the cleat at the foot of the mast. That way, when you haul on the bitter end, you will have four parts working the load instead of three.

Keep on sailing,

Had my Ty vang set up that way at first - it was an awkward set up for working the cleat. Not enough room for the downward pull. Reversed the vang and got an additional boost from the semi-direct pull down on the boom

Loose Footed? & Vang Mast Bail Height

Post by Mike Raehl »

I have sail slides on the foot of the main sail and did buy a small block to add purchase to the outhaul. To rig the main sail "loose footed" is it as simple as leaving the slides out of the boom track or will the slides interfer when tacking?

Also bought a bail from Rig-Rite to attach the vang to the mast. From info provided by another member of this board, Spartan recommended mounting the vang bail 7 1/2" from the bottom of the mast which would allow more room to set the cam cleat on the vang.

Yes, that's it. I can just reach over and yank down on the line. But with a 4 part tackle I could pull it in slowly.

Mike-I think it also has to do with the cut of the sail. As for the vang, instead of a bail on the mast, I placed a padeye in the slot down low on the aft side of the mast. Put bolts, washers and nyloc nuts on the padeye and just slide it down the track.

Yup to that. Lower the better because 7-1/2" up would really reduce the angle and the downward force would be compromised.

Just returned from out of town and found all the responses to my query. I was really impressed to find Cape Dory owners so knowledgeable about their boats. I'm very grateful to all of you for your suggestions. While I think I'm going to try to find someone more adept at metal-work than myself to install the vang, I intend to pass on all your suggestions.

If anyone can recommed someone on the East End of Long Island whose good at such installations I'd like to know. Once again, thank you all.
