We sail San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento/ San Joaquin Delta. We are berthed at Pier 39 in San Francisco. We love our boat. She handles the strong winds and currents of the bay smoothly, safely and dry.We are the third owner. The boat was commissioned in San Diego. I know nothing about the first owner but the broker I bought the boat from had been the broker when she was sold new.The second owner had her at Dana Point in southern CA about 60 miles north ofSan Diego. We hired a delivery captain to bring her up the coast to us in SF. I have heard that a total of 54 Cape Dory 31'swere built but that's apochraphal. What is the hull number of your boat? Thanks for the reply. Please let us know how sailing in the Chesapeake is?Micaela and I spent a summer in Baltimore but that was before our sailing days.John & Micaela BakerSolana

We did not know there were 76+ hulls. I am now interested to find out if anyoneknows how many were built and who designed it.Our Solana is stable and tracks true in the heavywinds and currents of San Francisco Bay.John & Micaela BakerSolana

My wife and I have recently purchased a Cape Dory 31 hull #53, built in 1984. We plan to sail it around Merritt Island, Fl. and occasional to the Keys and the Bahamas. It would be intresting to hear from any other Cape Dory owners in the southeastern US.

Re: Looking for Cape Dory 31 owners
My wife and I purchased CD31 hull #32 this fall in Virginia and moved her down the IC to North Carolina.
This was after owning a CD25D for 8 years. We looked at a lot of boats but always came back to the CD31.
The CD31 is a great layout that seems much larger than the CD30 to me. We are looking forward to Spring
sailing. Let's hear some experiences and lessons learned from you guys.

Re: Looking for Cape Dory 31 owners
My wife and I purchased a Cape Dory 31, SURPRISE, from the original owner in April 1996, hull number 30, built late 1983. We sail out of Georgetown on the Sassafras River, Upper Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Just for the record, the Cape Dory 31 was designed by Carl Alberg. I have several examples of Cape Dory Owners Association literature from the period when the 31 was introduced, some Cape Dory fleet sales brochures, contemporary new boat magazine reviews of the 31 including descriptions that clearly indicate Alberg designed the 31. I've enjoyed the boat for one season now althought I would echo a comment seen elsewhere about this boat, she seems somewhat tender. One person remarked that Alberg was not afraid to design a boat, specify a rig that has some power (more power, yeah!!). It could also be that I am dealing with a Harken roller furling 130 percent genoa as the working headsail on a generous cutter foretriangle. I am commissioning a new furling genoa with a max area of 115% and a series of two 'stops' or furling reef points and appropriate stiffeners and reinforcement panels that will allow it to be used partially furled in combination with the staysail. I expect this will help me taylor the sail power to conditions which can be gusty on the Cheseapeake Bay when it blows. Has anyone else deployed this type of headsail? I would like hear about other experiences. And,....how about them blisters! Any experiences, costs of repairs, etc. This boat has mostly wintered in the water and its got'em big time! Thanks and happy sailing!John Micaela Baker wrote: We own 'Solana' A Cape Dory '31' hull number 31.
