Looking for a mast gate for my cape dory

Post by Dan Sholler »

I am trying to find a mast gate for my cape dory typhoon (I think I have the right name here. I am referring to the gizmo that covers the sailfeed opening in the mast slot, so that the slugs can slide past it. It is usually a hinged cover that can be pinned in place.) The mast has been drilled to attach one, so I would think one used to be on there, but I have not found it. I contacted the original manufacturer of the spar (Spartan, now owned by Rig-Rite) and they said that this was not standard, and therefore must have been either custom made or taken from another mast section. Does anyone have any idea where I might find a selection of such things? Or where I might get one made for me?

Dan:
If Rig-Rite doesn't sell one to fit the Ty, you can make one. Buy a piece of aluminum carpet edging, the style that goes between a carpeted floor and linoleum. It has a curved lip. With some judicious sawing and filing, you'll fabricate a "gate" you can screw to the mast that will fill the widened portion of the mast. I made a set of these for a Columbia 22, it worked fine.
