NEW Bobstay..bottom painted, topsides polished...and..
Captains,
Today was one of those days...Started by painting Hanalei's bottom with Interlux ACT BottomKote, used a stick and painted her like a ceiling, no paint on hands! ! No staggering around the shipyard from the effects of bottom paint on skin! Bottom sufficently smooth/rough to assure a nice break up of the laminar flow across the surface of the hull and max. speed of Hanalei! While bottom was drying, went to Sound Rigging in Essex, CT and they made a new bobstay in 10 minutes for $68.04! Put it on Hanalei and commenced cleaning and waxing the topsides with 3M cleaner wax. Shines like a babies butt, she does....Then hung the stern ladder with its brand new teak step treads, should make it a lot easier to get aboard after a cool swim this summer.
Can barely type this note, hard to raise hands above waist, BUT, tomorrow she goes back in. This Captain will finally be off of half pay and back at sea. She should splash between one and three bells in the forenoon watch. Oh, and almost forgot, when arrive home, there on the front porch was a rather large package from Mack Sails in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Yep, the new mains'l, that will be bent on the spars as soon as the rig is tensioned... fair winds and following seas....

Re: Teak Treads.....made 'em!
John,
Couldn't find what I wanted in the stores, so made them out of a proper piece of teak. If ya want to know how, let me know and I'll write up a story.

Re: NEW Bobstay..bottom painted, topsides polished...and..
Captain Dave,
That a way! Doing it right and doin it proud! Isn't that a uniquely fine feeling, gazing back at a days work on the boats hull, seeing your face reflecting back..and that idiotic lopsided grin?! Each time the sun reflects off the hull and you see the shimmer of light from that fine wax job, it will make you proud of the work you did now. Good going, and welcome to spring! (Now if we could turn the heaters output up a little bit for us northern sailors..that would be nice...)

Re: How'd ya attach 'em to da rungs???
John,
I added some to the ladder on my Catalina 22 several years ago.
I purchased ours and the hardware, but the design is easy to copy and foolproof, with no holes in the ladder. I haven't looked to see if the treads are still available, but you could copy them. They were a couple of inches longer than the steps, long enough to need U-cutouts on either end. These engaged the uprights, keeping the treads from twisting around the rung. They were held to the rung with flying U-shaped clamps fastened with screws into the teak, two per tread. They worked great and were a grand blessing.
I have not come up with an easy way to add them to the double folding ladder on Parfait; there may be a change in store here when we are dreaming of more projects.

Re: How'd ya attach 'em to da rungs???
Those clamps sound like conduit clamps for electrical conduit. Sort of two side flaps with an arch in the center? Holes in either flap's center point? Hardware stores carry those in a couple sizes, but they are galvanized, so will need to be painted I supose.
Hey guys..just want to caution everyone here. Attach them as Dave says..don't drill into the pipe, as that will leak sometime, and if you are in warm weather, there is corrosion inside the pipe, at weld sites etc, and if you are in cold weather, there is freezing damage..I had that 2 years ago, and it ruined the S.S. tube.

Yeah, that's why I asked Dave how he did it.......
........I am not about to drill into the rungs of the ss ladder, plus I have a double folding ladder that's integral to the stern pulpit. The rungs don't offset when you fold up the ladder. So treads that overhang the rungs will collide and prevent folding.....

Re: How'd ya attach 'em to da rungs???
Larry,
Yes, just like conduit clamps, only of stainless steel. No piercing the ladder, easily removable, but somewhat incompatible with a ladder that folds in the middle. I seem to remember that the ladder on the Catalina folded from the top bracket and there was no interference between the upper and lower portion of the ladder. One advantage of low freeboard.
