barrrier coating - advise please ?

Post by dave »

I am thinking of putting a vinyester resin barrier coat (3M
barrier coat) just on the exposed part of the hull while
the boat (cape dory 28) is sitting in the water. Would this be a
problem ? I can do the rest when the boat is hauled. For
financial reasons do not want to haul the boat yet.

That is between the deck and the boot strip.

Does anyone see any problems ?

Hold on there Dave.....barrier coats for blister protection is put on under the bottom paint not the sides of the hull. Although it is possible for water to be "wicked up" into the sides for a very short distance from water penetration below the waterline, this is usually for just a few inches into the boot top area. There is generally no source for water absorption above the waterline unless the hull is cored.

Dave...this is the wrong product for the wrong job! Polish and wax your hull sides, but apply the barrier coat to a clean, dry bottom..BELOW THE WATERLINE!!!!!!!!!
