Marine Barrier Coat Necessary?

I'm in the process of removing layers upon layers of bottom paint using Peel Away. After I reach the gel coat (assuming I do sometime this Spring), and patch any abrasions, etc., should I apply a barrier coat before reapplying bottom paint? I'm thinking that a barrier coat might be good preventative medicine for blisters.

My recommendation is to put on the barrier coat. Once you have expended the time and energy to get to the bare glass, repair the dings, then apply a barrier coat, I used Interlux 2000 something (the good stuff). Follow the directions and you will have protected your vessel and increased the value. Keep records of cost, and take some photos of your work for the unbelieving future purchaser.

But then again it's only an opinion.

For what it's worth--3M now offers a "Marine Water Barrier Coating" that they (modestly) say is great. It is a vinyl ester based coating that reduces water absorption and fills minor cracks and pinholes. If you call 800-3M-HELPS you can get a booklet about using it and their other products (looks similar to some of the West booklets.
