plastic nameplate fix

Post by Russ Campbell »

If you own a Cape Dory and have always been disappointed in the
plastic nameplate that came with the boat and you can't afford to talk
to Spartan or have one made here's a solution you might think about.
I took the old nameplate off the boat and made a mold from it using
Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty which is available in any hardware store.
You could use plaster but I just liked working with Durham's better. I
screwed the nameplate to a board and built a little box around it about
1" high. After cleaning it good I sprayed the whole inside of the box
with furniture wax. I also used silicone spray. Basically anything to
act as a mold release agent. Then mix the water putty or plaster
according to directions on the box and pour into the mold. When it
hardens you just pop it out and you have a mold.
Next I ground up some scrap brass with a grinding wheel and saved the
metal filings. Then I mixed up some epoxy resin ( or West System) and
added the brass filings to it and poured it into the mold.
When it pops out you have a replica of your name plate that looks
like brass and was a lot cheaper than casting bronze.
