I want to upgrade the genoa winches on our 1981 CD 33. Winches are mounted on molded fiberglass pads and access to throughbolt them is not obvious. Anyone know the best/easiest way to remove old winches and install new ones? Does the coaming have to come off? Thanks.

We looked briefly at this on ‘Evening Light’. I think you have to crawl into the sail locker then look outboard & up for access to the bottom of the mounting bolts & the nuts. After removing the winch drum you should have access to the bolt heads. Keep us posted

Which winch do you plan on installing? (Say that fast - five times.)

Re: Upgrading genoa winches on CD 33
Jack, I have "Willow" a 1984 33CD and have worked a bit on the winches port isn't too bad, but starboard is a pain in the but unless you are a midget and can crawl into that smaller locker, I was half in and half out all afternoon just getting the winch off, but it's possible. Good luck! P.S. I rigged a piece of plywood, 6 foot long, and layed it in the locker so I could lay on it instead of bracing myself the whole time, if you support the plywood (attaching it to the boom) it will make life more bearable, sort of like a rolling mechanics platform. Re: Upgrading genoa winches on CD 33
I have a 1980 cd33 and I have upgraded my winches to self-tailers. What I have done is kept the original winches as spares in where they are originally mounted and put the self-tailers on the aft portion of the pads so they were closer to the helm station. Then to get to the winch pads, port-side locker provides full access to the pad and access to starboard side is done through the quarter berth by removing ceiling and access is there for the whole pad. Easiest job in the world as long as you have 2 people -- and use a backing plate!!!
