TY topping lift

Post by Bill Lawson »

What is the set up for a topping lift on a TY. The boom end fitting has two holes in it..one for the outhaul and the other for the topping lift. What is needed for the lift? Thanks

Bill,

I would run a 1/4 inch line outside the mast to a block hung off the end of the mast crane and down to the end of the boom. You could have it be either wire and unadjustable or run it down the mast to a cleat by the foot. I haven't found the need for one on mine though.

mine is wire with an eye and thimble attached to the masthead crane and run down a foot shy of the boom end where there is another eye and thimble. attached to this lower eye is a length of 1/4 rope with a slip knot and a brass snap hook. on the boom end is a small bronze shackle through the aft most hole to which is attached the snap hook. when sailing i unsnap the hook and attach it to the snaphook on the short pigtail of wire on the backstay(i presume you have one of these). this gets the topping lift out of the way of the mainsail trim, yet allows for easy connection when dropping the main or reefing. you can use the slip knot to adjust the height of the boom end which i rarely do.
