Can anyone please tell me the size of the wrench that is needed to take apart the seacocks for maintenance on a 1983 Cape Dory 27?
I have the Spartan Marine catalog and I don't know if the wrench that they sell would fit or is necessary. Can I just buy a wrench at the hardware store or does the wrench have to be thin like the one from Spartan?
Thanks for any help,
Brian

Re: wrench for seacock maintenance
The thinner wrench only comes in handy when holding the "tightness" nut when the "locking" nut is tighten over it. If the wrench on the tightening nut is thicker than the tightening nut height, the locking nut will jam into the wrench before it seats into the tightening nut.
I have never used the Spartan wrench and have found standard available open end wrenches which work fine. Even when the locking nut is taken off I have just held the seacock handle while undoing the locking nut with a standard wrench (any thickness). Sorry I do not remember the sizes because I use adjustable wrenches.

Re: Thin wrench
Brian,
The thin wrench is necessary for proper tightening of the locking nut. I believe it is a 15/16 inch wrench. I purchased my wrench from a large hardware supply house near home. The only advantage to having the one made by Spartan that I know of is that it only has one size on it. A normal open end wrench has two sizes and you always have to make certain that you have the correct one or you can round off the tops of the points on the nut. Of course you could always take a normal wrench and make it a single ended wrench. There is some other wisdom about seacocks on this bulletin board you could find by using the search.
Have fun
