Hood Roller Furling Drum Jamming SEAFURL 2636

I'm having a problem disassembling my Hood SEAFURL 2636 (circa 1982) lower drum assembly. The drum is binding and I'm sure the bearings need to be replaced.
PROBLEM: It appears that the drum section needs to be lifted up off the lower headstay eye to drop the bearing out (imagine it's partially corroded in the drum assembly since it won't drop out when I release the lower snap rings {2]and protecting drum diaphragm seal).The entire assembly won't just lift up (It's a boat/that would be too easy) so I need to know the following:
QUESTION: Is it possible to release the drift pin in the drum assembly and raise the drum...which begs the question- does the drift pin go all the way through the drum assembly..or does it just fit into a "notch" of the feedsection tube...AND.. if the drift pin is released and I lift up on the drum section..will the feed tube force the lower bearing out the bottom of the drum?
OR IS ALL THIS A MOOT POINT AND WILL I HAVE TO ASCEND (i hate going up the mast while in the water) TO DROP THE WHOLE JIBSTAY/ROLLER
FURLING ASSEMBLY??
If you have run into this problem or can think of an easy way to fix it -other than sewing on jibhanks- the input would be appreciated.....Randy SERENATA #10 25D

i can't answer your detailed questions but naturally have an opinion anyway! - i had a hood furler, around same vintage as yours, and it never worked very well - i replaced it with a Furlex, much much better - if the lower unit of yours is gone, i'd be suspicious of the whole set-up, it's almost 20 years old, including the headstay, and i'd replace it all

I too had a Hood furler and regret that I don't know what model. When I first had problems with binding my research said that I needed to rinse it thoroughly with fresh water. The theory was that nothing in the assembly was subject to corrosion but it would bind up with an accumulation of salt.

I still don't like furlers but I have to admit that the thorough rinsing (I really over did it!) made a great improvement.
