Adding an extra halyard...How?

The mast on Sine Qua Non (CD27, 1980) will be unstepped for the winter. She has only a main halyard and a jib halyard, which is used for the Furlex furler. Its conceivable that I may want to get a cruising spinnaker. So, another halyard is necessary, or at least would come in handy even if I don't get a spinnaker. Obviously I'll need a sheave at the masthead to accomodate the additional halyard. Not much room at the mast head of a CD27 if memory serves. Do I somehow just add another sheave? Do I remove the sheave that's up there for the main and jib halyards and replace it with one that can accomodate 3 halyards? Is it something I can do myself?

Warren...if you go to the Rig-Rite Inc web site and look at the Spinnaker Bails section (http://www.rigrite.com/SparParts/MH_Spi ... bails.html) I'm sure you'll find the right one. You can also e-mail them with all the details of your boat and they will match it up for you. And yes, you can add it yourself....if I can, anyone can! LOL. Good Luck

Irrespective of boat size the spinnaker halyard can be mounted on a bail attached to the top/forward edge of the mast. Use a swivel block
attached to the bail . This will allow the spinnaker to be hoisted outboard of the forestay. FWIW

You don't need to remove anything. You need to add a <a href="http://www.rigrite.com/spartan/cd4_mast.html">masthead spinnaker bail</a> at the masthead. Then you just attach a block to the bail.

It is critical that the block have a swivel head or you will have mucho problemas with twisted halyards.

i'm not familiar enough with your size cape dory to know, but if you don't have an all rope topping lift/spare main halyard you might think about adding that to the aft side of the mast (by attaching a swivel block there) -

GREAT IDEA! My CD27 has the stationary topping lift that adjusts at the end of the boom. I was thinking of replacing that setup too.

The bail that has been described is attached to a flat plate that can mounted on top of the mast. How you accomplish this depends on what else is mounted on the sheeve housing. What I did was to drill and tap 4 machine bolts into the housing on top. You just have to be careful not to allow the bolt to infringe on the halyards beneath the housing. If they do, file them down flat. Use locktite when you put the bolts through the housing.

Warren, for what its worth I'll email you some photos I took when I had our mast down this summer. I replaced all standing and running rigging, and made reference photos of the mast head. Ours is a 30 but I think the masthead fitting is similar, and ours has a fitting for the spinnaker halyard block attached. I also replaced the topping lift with new line; ours was adjustable already. I added the running topping lift last year--it adds nicely to the adjustability. When motoring with the dodger up, I like to stand right behind the dodger with the tiller between my legs. Before the adjustable topping lift the boom invariably swung into my head, even when pulled to the side with the traveler. There was no easy way to pull it up out of the way. Now I just pull the boom way up and cleat it off!
