Typhoon insignia plate

I'm going to purchase a 1980 Ty weekender. Do all Tys have the round metal plate insignia? If someone has removed this one, can it be replaced?

You might check with Roger Winiarski at Bristol Bronze. Apparently they were in the process of providing at least one Typhoon builder's plate back in June. See the message at: http://www.toolworks.com/cgi-bin/tw/wwb ... i?cd&26992 for a few clues or check out Bristol Bronze's web site at the link below.

Good luck!

Dear Bill,

In reply to your question about the Cape Dory Typhoon Builder's Plates, the majority of the boats were produced with a plastic builder's plate. A few of the boats (I don't know why) were made using Bronze plates. In response to requests by members of the CDSOA we began working about a year ago on the tooling to reproduce the Builder's Plates for the various Cape Dory models. That tooling is now done an we have been providing the Builder's Plates for the past several months.

The original plates that were made in Bronze were done as sand castings and then finished with a stroke sander. By that method they lost some sharpness around the letters and art work. Using new art work kindly supplied by Cape Dory members we now reproduce the plates by investment casting. This is the method of casting that is usually used in the jewelry industry here in Rhode Island. We feel that the quality of our plates is superior to the originals. If you want to do a search on the Cape Dory web site for Bronze Builder's Plates you will find a number of comments from several months ago from various owners who have purchased our plates and who have good things to say about them.

If you would like to order a Builder's Plate you can do so by using the order form that is part of your web site or you can call me at 401-625-5224 with the appropriate information.

I own a 1980 Ty that does in fact have the oval plate located just behind the tiller. Hull #1684.
