COQUINA was hauled yesterday. Her prop was so fouled the engine couldn't turn it. BUT when I scraped off the barnacle load (looked like a basketball from outerspace), it easily separated from the blades. So Stoveblack does, in fact, provide some barrier, but probably works only if you use your engine frequently -- or, at least, more than I do. BTW, The Perry nut, new this season, was completely eaten away and the Dynaplate and the transducer looked like shellfish farms. The bottom was shrimp and slime free -- just a thin green coating. Micron with Biocide seems to work well.

Re: Here we go again.....
Captain Sargent,
When and if the anchor is ever brought to short peak on the fine sailing vessel Coquina, DO you EVER start the engine? Hanalei's prop is barnicle free, but she is out at sea every weekend from launch to pull out.
It very well may be that the Perrier spring water that is used as flush water in Greenwich cove has a very detrimental effect on sailing vessel propellers. Possibly Captain, you must consider moving to a "better" port ! !
Sir, I remain.........your most HUMBLE servant....(with a CLEAN prop).....in Noank, CT....

Re: Stove Black revisited
My lord what in the world do you have in your water up there?
Never heard of such extreme fouling on the prop and you say
that your perry nut was gone in one season also? Something
is really wrong there must have a stray charge in the water or
something on your boat. I would be very concerned about all the
through the hull fittings regarding how sound they are after hearing
about that condition. Make sure you check everything below the
waterline when you haul out and try and find the problem. You don't
by any chance have someone near your boat with a battery charger
running or hooked up to shore power all the time while your at
your berth?

I'm on a mooring 1/4 mile offshore. My old boat had no similar problems on the same mooring. But I didn't use the engine for the last three months. The Perry nut disappearance seems mighty strange indeed.

Re: Here we go again.....
Alas, Dave, COQUINA is SOOOO fine a sailing vessel we don't need no fr@#$!!*ng motor. My wife is contantly berating me about being so brave and seamanlike (among other things)and she's right I should run it just for giggles but I don't. But I will in the future (sez I on the high 'n dry).

it sounds like we touched this subject short time ago...flush with perrier issue.....
again and maybe there is something to it....
i had a perry nut a couple of seasons and also desintergrated and barnacles loved hanging on my prop which I described as a pineapple...
shaft and prop bronze cotter pin bronze...it all got better as long as zinc was not there....try it what can you loose you can allways
put the perry nut back if that works for you....anyway hope things get better next season if not we can deal with it again...
cheers/mike compinche cd30.....from the sunny side of the sound.
