According to the New York Times, Thursday September 20, 2001, page B13, Column 6,

"The Coast Guard has now opened the harbor to recreational craft from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a 10 knot speed limit."

The security zone around Indian Point is still in effect, requiring recreational vessels to identify themselves and request permission to transit the Hudson River 1000 yards north and south of the plant in Peekskill. Rescreational vessels are generally being requested to transit the West side of the river.

According to the word around here - Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken NJ - directly across from Manhattan - the ban is still in effect. I was told that someone who violated it was boarded by the Coast Guard but maybe that was just heresay.

New York Harbor is Closed to Recreational Vessels

Post by Catherine Monaghan »

There are still restrictions on pleasure craft operating in New York Harbor. Essentially, pleasure craft can only transit the harbor, under restriction, and must keep clear of the established security zones, to <b>leave the harbor. Pleasure craft may not enter or re-enter the harbor once they leave.</b>

More information regarding the current restrictions can be found at:

<a href="http://www.incidentnews.gov/incidents/i ... t_8.htm</a>

and be sure to take a look at the Latest Waterway Closure Information reports as well as the Closure Maps.

Additional port restriction information can be obtained from the following websites:
<a href="http://www.hklaw.com/maritimedev.asp?Su ... ect=new</a>
<a href="http://www.incidentnews.gov/">http://ww ... ws.gov/</a>
<a href="http://www.uscg.mil/safeports/">http:// ... eports/</a>

The Coast Guard has also been broadcasting port restriction information and instructions on VHF Ch. 22.

Hopefully the restrictions will be lifted soon.
