Lightning ground set up on a CD25

Post by Jim »

I cannot find any evidence of a lightning ground set up from the rig to the keel bolts or to a plate on my 1981 CD25. I find it hard to believe that a company like Cape Dory would not have thought of this. Is there something I am not seeing?

I remember reading a previous post or it might have been in the manual that the CD25 does not have one. Makes no sense to me either. Let me know if and how you rig one up if you do. I might try it as well.

There are no keel bolts on Cape Dories. The ballast is encapsualted. That's one of the things that makes the CD a strong boat, and is comforting to know when you inevitably run aground.
Regarding lightning ground, I have a 1986 CD 30 which is "grounded" according to the thinking of the time. It is actually inadequate, since the grounding wire is too small and there is no direct lead from the mast to the ground plate. The ground provided by CD is from the upper shrouds to the ground plate, and the too-small wires make several turns before they reach the plate.
Let us know what you do to remedy your problem and we all may benefit.

There is a rig on my 1981 CD25 goes from the mast to a plate on the Hull, I will examine the details tomorrow evening and respond. The person I bought said it has already been hit once by lightning so I figure the boat is safe since lightning doesn't hit twice, Right?

CD25 Not #1 except in my mind :~)

I have a rather large wire running from the mast to a plate on the starboard side, however my thru-hulls are not bonded to this grounding system. Maybe someone can chime in about whether the factory system grounded the thru-hulls also
