Folks,
As if the NY disaster ain't enough, our lustrous gas companies are seeing fit to start gouging us in unprecedented proportions. I just bought a supply of reg. unleaded at 1.85/gal. I am 90 miles from the twin cities of Mpls and St. Paul, where the price a this moent is breaking through $3.00/gal. and Chicago and Kentucky are at $5.00/gal now and climbing due to panic buying.
I don't want to fuel the panic, but you should know this and act accordingly.
God, are we in trouble.

Can't imagine why people clear across the country would panic
to buy gas. I just filled the tank in my car this evening
while coming home from work and Exxon was still charging
$1.62 gal here in Massapeuqa, Long Island, New York.
Matter of fact everyone around here was very calm and
still numb from the event which just unfolded in nearby
Manhattan. I don't think we will have a panic here just
thoughts of retaliation on whoever did this task. I feel as if
they have awaken a sleeping giant because America will now
become galvanized against terrorism and pursue the people who
did this cowardly act. Our prayers and thoughts go out to
many of those who lost a loved one today.
respectfully submitted,

Larry,
Thanks for the tip. I ran out and filled up the van at $1.38 / gallon. I hope that there is no gouging, but it wouldn't surprise me a bit.
If this isn't a week I'd much rather be sailing, then I don't know what it would be.
Peace be with you,
Ken

I tried to enjoy sailing yesterday to no avial. My wife has her office 3 blocks from the White House. I called her to get out of town the second I heard on the radio about the Pentagon. After that the cell phone circuits were too busy to get trough so all I could do was worry . Too bad because yesterday was great sailing weather, I just couldn't enjoy it.

Re: All CCDOA URGENT READ -UPDATE
The gas companies are raising the prices here by the hour. As of 0600 this morning the gas prices at the same place I bought 1.85/gal gas at last night, are now at $2.13. Mpls., Mn. prices are at $3.25/gal, an climbing. I waited 15 minutes in line last night, and the store had a lineup waiting for them to reopen this morning.
Regardless if you actually "see" this happening in your neighborhood at this time, it IS happening in the midwest, and I suspect it will spred to the rest of the nation today.
Peace,

I believe this price gouging is being carried out at the retail (i.e. local) level. The answer to this is remember who the price gougers were and boycott them now and forever.

Re: All CCDOA URGENT READ
I hate hearing that people are taking advantage of a bad situation. When hurricane Hugo hit South Carolina, we had no gasoline, electricity and such for quite a while. There were several gasoline stations with generators that pumped gas at $2.00 a gallon, all bumped up by the retailer. That place quickly went out of business after the disaster and has never recovered, no matter who the owner is.
Down here, we do have legislation against price gouging during disasters. I bought gas today for the same $1.33 that it was three days ago.
Hope things go better for you guys in the Midwest. Do remember who these people are who are taking advantage of a terrible situation.

Re: All CCDOA URGENT READ -Interesting update
Yup, that is exactly what it is. There is a Fleet Farm store in Minnesota that had the gaul to raise his prices to $6.10/gal. No buyers (duh), so he returned to $1.43 this morning. The Minn. Attorney general has notified him of their intent to prosecute him.
Here in Wisc., prices returned to *below* the pre-disaster prices for some reason. Our Att. Gen. sent inspectors around to stations and gave them a letter that stated that it is illegal to raise their prices more than a certain amount per day, and that he would prosecute anyone who tried to take advantage of the customer.
Jeesh, some people...
I'm going sailing tomorrow..season ends in a month, and I am far from ready for it to do so.

Seems the only decent sense you have is in what boat brand you own. Other than that, you are a paniced fool who bought into the mayhem. It's the "evil oil empire" again! Typical liberal dribble- get a grip on yourself man!
PS I live in the "land of 10,000 taxes" that claimed ripped you off. My gas station is at $1.65 now and has been for two weeks (Mobil Oil).

Re: All CCDOA URGENT READ
Sorry to disagree, but it was indeed true, at least in the Twin Cities. Gas retailers spiked prices 10 - 15% Tuesday evening, thereby contributing to a short term panic. I know, I drove past the notorious Mills Fleet Farm station at 5:30 PM and they were showing 1.699, four hours later on my return trip and now running on empty and looking for a station that hadn't raised the price - not wanting to support "free marketeers", I saw Mills at 1.899. Every station I passed that evening was at 1.899 or higher, I eventually paid that price at one of your innocent Mobil stations. They have since lowered their price to pre-terrorist levels. And indeed, Mills did concede that they had posted a $6.00 "unauthorized" price for a short time Tuesday evening.
Thanks for the alert Larry. Hal, back off.

I do not consider myself liberal, but how is stating a fact about gas prices soaring in one part of the country "liberal drivel?" Maybe I am a liberal, if to share information means to be a liberal. Damn. The things you learn on here.

If you'd have read my post before lashing out Eric you would have seen Larry's insinuation to which I was referring: paranoia of the "big oil companies out gouging the little guy". Re: All CCDOA URGENT READ
If believing that I am some kind of traitor (I assume that's what you are saying) brings comfort to your world, Hal, then I will be praying for you as well as all the victims. God help us if we are concerned with superficial labels like "liberal" and "conservative" at a time like this.
I spent two years living in Eastern Europe following the fall of Communism and one of the most overwhelming impressions I came away with is how lucky we are to live in a country where the difference between our most conservative lawmakers and our most liberal center on issues involving the moment when life begins and ends, and how best to spend our vast fortune.
When you see people struggling with issues like whether the government should own all property and whether people have the right to pursue their own fortunes, happiness and grace, then most of our major issues seem petty indeed.
Again, I hope you come out of this experience with a greater appreciation for how lucky you are to have the freedoms you have and how wrong you are to try to label/insult and trash people based on your notions of which side of the (thankfully) limited political spectrum they lie. Talk like this is what makes totalitarianism so appealing to so many.
Please work to bring us together... Not apart.
