CD 10 Restoration
Does anyone have any tips on how to restore a Cape Dory 10 (Hull no. 321)? We believe it was built around 1965. It has been stored outside and neglected for at least 10 years. The paint is peeling but there are no leaks and it does float. The seats and trim appear to be mahogany. We are told that there is flotation under the seats but I understand from this board that flotation may be a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated as we are novices.
Re: CD 10 Restoration
My brother has a CD10 which I worked on several years ago. I removed seats, etc. and refinished. I wet sanded the gelcoat with 400 w/d (or finer) and waxed. I also had to make a new rudder. However, his transom was warped from lying upside down and soaking up water, so I had to cut it to fit. The so-called floatation can be replaced or reused; I'd replace it if possible with similar material but new.
One other thing I had to fabricate was the mahogany collar for the mast at the bow. All this is possible, but it takes time. The boats are tender and if towed the sailing version will take water through the dagger board trunk. Good luck. Just take your time. Others may have photos for reverence, or I can get some for you at some point.
