how thick is the teak?

Post by Brian W. »

I'm going to be mounting one of those "swing out mounts for electronics" from West in the coming days for the Garmin 182 chartplotter recently purchased. Utilizing it so as to be able to view the display from the cockpit, particularly in night or inclement weather, without having to mount it on the pedestal (it will 'swing out' into the companion way when needed). Anyway, there are two possible places for me to mount it : 1) the thick teak frame around the companion way that the grab handles are secured to - certainly the thickest choice. 2) just to the left of that frame on the teak 'bulkhead' that lines the interior of the aft side of the cabin trunk- this is more desirable as it's more out of the way. ("Sirius" I notice you have some intstruments mounted there).

My question is regarding option 2. How thick is that piece of teak? I need screws long enough to support the weight of the 'arm' 1/2inch maybe, and obviously don't want screws going through the fiberglass into the cockpit.

thanks for any input,

Brian,

On Parfait, a CD/36, there is about an inch between the inner and outer panels which are each probably 3/4" thick. If you have anything mounted in either the inner or outer surface you are considering, I suggest removing it to see what you are working with. A rudimentary pair of calipers would also give you some idea of the total thickness.

Good luck,

Ken
