Help w/ CD28 Autopilot Installation

Post by Dennis »

Hi All,

I am about to bite the bullet and order a ST2000 Autopilot for my CD28. To those who have installed them, do I need to get any extensions, tiller brackets, or anything else besides what comes with the basic unit?

As always, any advise is welcomed.

Thanks,
Dennis

We purchased the longest ext. and the mounting bracket for it. We mounted on the stb cockpit combing and cut the ext to fit. We also order all three tiller brackets(top mount) and I think we ended up using the middle(4"?)but I can't remember now. We mounted the fluxgate under the stb settee against the bulkhead and ran the wires with the waterhoses.

My advice would be to order at least two tiller brackets and then two mtg. bracket extensions and just return the ones that you don't need. Nothing worse than waiting for parts to finish a job.

Easiest way to mount the 2000 is to follow the directions on mounting the pin on your tiller. You will find that it will be in just the right place where you will not have to have any extensions, or other goodies to do the job-just the unit itself and the stuff that is provided.

Once you get your pin installed on top of the tiller,(you can mount it 90 degrees to the face of the tiller as the autopilot arm turns to match the mounting), just drill a hole in the cockpit seat according to the directions sent with the Autohelm. Be sure to install a wooden block under the hole and drill the same size hole through that. You will need the block as there is a lot of torque in the Autohelm.

For wiring, install the plug assembly on the side of the cockpit under the Autohelm. Use at least 16 guage wire for this purpose and make a short of run as possible to your switch or battery.

The Autohelm 2000ST has everything built into the unit. Just be sure you do not have any metal around the bulb end as it will do nasty things to you when you try to use it!

You may be a lucky one that has a remote-can't help you with that but I am sure someone has has installed one will be able to help.

Hope this helps
