Battery location on CD25

I just purchased a CD25 and noticied that the battery is located in the aft port cockpit locker. Does anyone have their battery located in another location, such as inside the cabin?? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated....

Hi All,

Traditional lead/acid batteries give off hydrogen gas when charging. Are you sure you want this explosive gas inside the cabin? Remember the Hindenburg - all hydrogen! As for location, the usual spot on a CD25 is the fwd end of the port cockpit locker.

I've been using a gel battery, as it takes abuse well. The gel batteries recover to near full capacity after an accidental total discharge. AGM batteries are another good choice. Gel batteries are resilient, but not as efficient as lead/acid so you may want to go up a group size or two for similar capacity. Without the risk of liquid acid escaping, you can skip the battery box (cover the terminals), making it easier to install and strap the battery down. Strapped down and acid free is ideal during a knockdown.

Any other thoughts out there on batteries?

I just purchased a CD25 with the two batteries relocated under the V-berth. I haven't been worried about a hydrogen concentration accumulating because they are only charged with the motor. The vessel does not have shore power available. They are kept in battery boxes.

The batteries are the deep cycle style.

As in Jon's case I also have the batteries (2) located in the forward cockpit locker(s) against the cabin bulkhead connected with a GUEST switch. The dual battery system seems to work well (I too just purchased my CD25 #288 last year). Placing the battery here (traditional) I guess keeps the battery close to the panel (maybe less resistance?). Perhaps the battery was set back in your case to facilitate a shorter electric start/charging cable?.

I owned a 1980 CD-25 before I moved up to a CD-33 three years ago. The boat came with just one battery located in front part of the port cockpit locker, closest to the cabin bulkhead. That is the best place. As I upgraded the boat with more electronics I added a second battery and a Guest switch and placed the second battery on the same location, but on the starboard locker, to balance the weight. That is where you should keep those two batteries. Cockpit lockers, one on each side. Good sailing!

My CD 25 has one battery located up under the V berth. I got her with this set up and I don't have any problems. I do however remove the battery to charge it. I'm not sure why the previous owner moved it to there but I plan to rewire the entire boat this winter and I will probably put it and another in the cockpit lockers as suggested by some who responded to your inquiry.
