Recirulating Head?

Post by Bill Romeo »

I recently purchased a 1980 CD25 with a recirculating head. How does this type of system work? Where does the waste go? I have not been able to get this system to work - even after I turned all of the valves, it does not pump water into the bowl. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bill,

Thetford has a web site that may help you. The link below gives some general information about operating a recirculating toilet and some diagnostic procedures as well. Good luck!

I have a recirculating head on my CD 28... your system may be different...

The holding tank has a baffle in it. Waste goes in on one side... liquids can pass to the other side but solids are held in place. You can then draw the liquid back as flushing water.

The plumbing allows intake either from the holding tank or from the seawater intake. Similarly, waste can be directed either to the holding tank or overboard.

Drawing flushing water from the holding tank requires a minimum level in the tank. If you're below it, the pump will draw only air. The little intake valve on the head needs to be open, too, or you can't draw water in. Try filling the holding tank half way with water... much more than the minimum... follow all the hoses so you can see that the right valves are open, etc., and see if you can draw water into the bowl. It's possible the pump needs rebuilding, too, if the seals are shot.

Once you're figured it out...

As a matter of practice, I always start with fresh water... there are too many little critters in seawater... that's a big part of the odor problem. Also, when you pump out... refill the tank with rinse water and pump again. That will remove residual waste on the bottom of the tank. Repeat as required.

For treatment, I get the environmentally friendly stuff at Wal Mart.
