CD-30 Manufacturing Years

Post by Joe Welna »

The spec page in this wonderful websight reports that the CD-30 was produced from 1980 to 1987 followed by the 30MKII from '87 to '90. Yet I've noticed people occasionally refer to their late '70s vintage CD-30s, both ketch and cutter rigs. Can anyone shed some light on this mystery?

The manufacturing info was provided by the folks at Robinhood Marine, which has many of the same people as the original Cape Dory. It's the best they could come up with from the records they still have, and I don't know of a better source for the information.

Anyone who has any corrections please email me.

Walt, I think the point is well made and that the CD30 was indeed in production before 1980, even as a CD30. I think the original version was the ketch version and would guess that it was out about 1976. The cutter became available shortly thereafter. I also remember seeing years of CD30 listed prior to 1980 in the BUC book of used boat prices. The boat did go through evolutionary changes, especially over those early years. A friends 1980 cockpit has a seat across the aft end of the cockpit, mine does not. I also vaguelly remember being in an early CD30 ketch which did not have nearly as much teak and ash trim in the cabin as at least the 1980 models on had.

So, there may have been a slip of the tongue from Robinhood.

Jon, Thanks for the history lesson. I remember reading, I think, somewhere about a worm drive wheel steering system in "early" model CD30s? I'd love to hear from anyone with more details about the evolutional changes in this fine cruiser. For that matter I'm not aware of the difference between the 30 and the 30MKII.

Hi gang,

I might as well add my confusion to this topic. I recently looked up Cape Dory in one sailboat reference book. It listed two CD-30s. I think I remember them to be an Intrepid CD-30 by Hood and the Alberg CD-30? The boats looked similiar in the hull design but there appeared to be different.

I'll post what I have on the specifications for the Clive Dent CD-30 MKII. This boat is completely different from what the factory called the "classic 30".

The Alberg-design CD-30 was clearly in production in 1978. My boat is hull #69, dated 1978, though some date stamps on the fiberglass (in the locker) go back into 77. It does have the worm gear steering, which must have been the original design. It has plenty of teak in the cabin, but I have not noticed any ash, and has the cockpit seat extending around the aft end, except where it is interrupted by the steering box around the worm gear mechanism.

I would be interested to know how the design and construction evolved over the years. It is a great boat to sail, and seems mostly well built, though I was not happy to find that the deck-hull joint was held together with sheet metal screws instead of thru-bolted - though there are a number of bolts through the joint holding stanchions and chainplates etc. I guess they were relying on the thick black adhesive they used on the joint. I hope it does not deteriorate over time! The gelcoat cracks also get a lot of attention in the bulletin boards, along with wet decks - but the latter is mainly an issue of maintaining the caulking under deck fittings.

The one data point I can add is that I have Cape Dory 30 hull number 36, which was manufactured with a ketch rig in 1977. It has the spoked wooden wheel in the back of the cockpit attached to an Edison worm drive. The original Yanmar YSB12 engine still works great.

My 1977 owners manual also shows the cutter rig.

The oldest 30 I can recall seeing advertised was a 1976 ketch.
