Tried to loosen the lock nut on the stuffing box today, but it wouldn't budge. I vaguely remember someone recommended the Spartan packing nut wrenches. Do these really make the job much easier? And if you don't have the wrenches; should you just give the lock nut a good whack with a hammer and screwdriver?
Can you re-pack the stuffing box without disconnecting the engine coupling?
Also, the stuffing box hose connects the fiberglass tube [ stern tube]
with the stuffing box. Is that correct? And what type hose is best?
I know this info is in the archives, but it's very difficult accessing it.
Thanks, Brian

Just got my stuffing box back together today. It took a little doing, and lots of patience (for which I am not too well known), but it finally got it back together. Dont know about "whacking" the locking nuts, my broke loose fairly easy. You do not need to disconnect the shaft at all, just install one layer of flax, tighten the nut on the shaft (to compress the flax) take the nut off, add the next "layer" of flax, re-tighten and remove the nut, and add the final layer (after this layer it may be somewhat difficult to get the nut back on the stuffing box) I used a piece of PVC cut to fit around the shaft and then screwed the packing nut donw on the PVC to compress the new flax as much as possible. Then the nut went right on. BTW, make sure that each of the three pieces of flax are offset at the joints. I offset the first two by 180 degrees and the third one 90 degrees to the last one. THe flax "joints" should not be stacked on each other. Hope that makes sense.
good luck

Brian,
On my CD270 I found that two 12" slip-lock wrenches worked well for opening the stuffing box. They were not top of the line wrenches and I bought them at Wal-Mart, as I recall.
I'm thinking about replacing my packing, but dread working down in that cramped area since I'm not as flexible as I used to be. I've had my boat for two years and, so far, have only tightened the nut to slow the drip.
Good luck,
Jim

Re: CD25D Stuffing Box
I used a "spanner" wrench that I found in my grandfathers tool box and a large channel lcok wrench. I think that you should locate this type of wrench as it is the right tool for the the job. It works well and you will need it to adjust the stuffing box in the future.
