My 30c has got the worm gear steering, and doesn't seem to have an emergency tiller anywhere. Is this normal for the worm gear? It certainly looks pretty solid, and I know they have a good reputation for reliability, but still....
Anyhow, I'm one of those weirdos that actually likes to steer with a tiller, and was hoping to try the emergency tiller out just for fun.
Anybody know anything about this?
Thanks a lot!

Re: emergency tiller
I'm a tiller guy too, and have been wondering the same thing. I can't answer the question since I just got my boat about three weeks ago, but can ask another.
My surveyor noticed what he thought was excessive play in the helm - with no reaction in the rudder. Is the system adjustable? Has anyone ever seen the need for an emergency tiller on the worm gear system or is it as indestructible as it appears?

Re: emergency tiller
On the worm drive units an emergency tiller is installed by removing the steering shaft and unbolting the flange at the top of the rudder stock.A tiller arm has to be fashioned with a flange that is compatable to it's mate at this location and bolted on.(I would guess the flange is available from Edson if you can't rig something generic).Hope this is of some help.Huw wrote: My 30c has got the worm gear steering, and doesn't seem to have an emergency tiller anywhere.
