CD 25 Sail/ Outboards/What fits?
I purchased a CD 25(1976 model) without an outboard motor. I currently use my power boat trolling motor-1983 Johnson 9.9hp 15'' shaft. This works OK but would like a 20 inch shaft 4 stroke 4-6hp. 9.9hp seems like overpowering the displacement hull. The lazarette compartment seems limiting. The new outboards both 2 and 4 cycle seem to have larger heads(especially with self contained gas tanks). What engines did CD recommend for these boats? What new engines will fit?

It sounds like you and I are both out looking for new outboards. I have a CD 26. Had a Johnson 9.9 with extended shaft and have been wondering the same thoughts. Let's e-mail what we are learning.Gerry/Barracuda wrote: I purchased a CD 25(1976 model) without an outboard motor. I currently use my power boat trolling motor-1983 Johnson 9.9hp 15'' shaft. Re: CD 25 Sail/ Outboards/What fits?
Gerry-
I have a 78 cd25 -and after many hours on this board and digging through the web-- I've just purchased a new 8hp 2 stroke Nissan (20).
My old motor was an '82 9.9 Johnson- plenty of hp, but it was tired and had to go... I chose the Nissan based on:
1. the lack of mods to get it in the well
2. it has an alternator
3. it's size and thru-prop exh. might mean i'll finally shut the lazarette (sp?)...
4. price
We'll soon see how it performs...
good luck,
steve

Re: CD 25 Sail/ Outboards/What fits?
I have a 76 CD25 also with the old OMC9.9. I just ordered a 8hp Tohatsu (same as Nissan) 2 stroke with alt and electric start for alittle over $1500. I looked at many 4 strokes but they all seemed to big and real heavy. Tohatsu is around 60lbs so I saving 30lbs from the old OMC. Most 8-9hp 4 strokes if they will fit are 80-115lbs. Too much it the thing breaks and you need to rip it out for service at the mooring etc. Like the idea of the 4 stroke but the weight is a real issue. The old 9.9hp upsets the balance as it is. Others are using the Honda 5hp 4 stroke and like see past messages but I'm not sure about the power here in Buzzards Bay.

Re: CD 25 Sail/ Outboards/What fits?
I have been using a 8hp Honda 4 stroke in our '76 CD25 for 4 years. I like it quite a lot. It will cruise all day @ 5.3 knots at part throttle using about 1/2 gal/hr and still have some reserve punch if required. It has been ultra reliable and quiet. It is a bit heavy, about 72#. I trashed the old decayed mounting plate and made a new one to move the engine forward a little. Also rerouted the bypass fumes outside the well to permit runnning with the well cover down. Alternator is only 5 amp though.Gerry/Barracuda wrote: I purchased a CD 25(1976 model) without an outboard motor. I currently use my power boat trolling motor-1983 Johnson 9.9hp 15'' shaft. 9 years ago we bought a 6hp Johnson (OMC) for the first WINDRUSH, a CD 25. It had plenty of power (even to push us to windward--slowly--in a blow) and the alternator charged two batteries.

Re: outboard motor for CD26
I have a 9.9 Honda on my CD26 but if I were replacing it, I'd look real close at the new 8hp 4 stroke Yamaha...also electric start and alternator equiped but 25lbs lighter

Re: CD 25 Sail/ Outboards/What fits?
I have a 1978 CD25 and last year I purchased a Honda 5hp 4 Stroke and I love it. It pushes me fine here in the Cape Fear River @ Southport. Have bucked a 5+knot incoming tide going out for an ocean race and she performed strong considering what she was pushing. At 50lbs it's easy to manage stowing it below during races and reinstalling to return to port. With my engine well design I'm not sure how the 8 hp would fit. One note: because of the thrust of stopping my dory to reverse, I've sheared several of the brass sheer pins...just converted to stainless sheer pin w/no problem. Otherwise, no pollution when you crank and no mixing! Life is good!

Chris:
Is your Honda a long or a short shaft? Also, are using an S or an L type prop?
Thanks In Advance.

Oops. Think First Then Ask.
Chris:
Duh, I have deduced that the S and L props that are specified are actually the Short and the Long shafts.
Still, I would like to know which of the two lengths you are using.
Thanks,
Jim
