Anchor Windlass on CD 36

Post by Rick Fadeley »

Does anyone have experience with the
installation/mounting of an anchor windlass
on a CD 36 sailboat? Looking to install one but the small
foredeck with the staysail boom obstruction makes the
job difficult. Any recommendations?

I installed a simpson lawrence manuel windlass on my 36 just ahead of the forestay. The only tough part was cutting through the steel plate reinf. just under the deck. The problem that I have is that the chain goes into the locker at the forward end and tends to ball up and put a bind on the windlass. Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do to fix it?

I just installed a Lewmar Concept one on the deck just aft of the staysail. It required moving the starboard cleat over about two inches, utilizing one set of holes. I then built a wooden base so that the chain would lead properly. this position puts the windlass slightly to the right of the staysail boom, but the height of this particular unit allow the boom to work regardless. The motor fits in the right-hand side of the locker with a small cut out in the top of the partition. This will not affect the integrity of the area since the partition did not go all the way to the deck anyway. I called Robinhood Marina in Maine and this is one of the recommended windlasses and one of the positions they recommended.
