thanks to all - engine is running at this point and hopefully will be ok - i am skittish about it and want to make sure decompression lever is in the right position - it is down, i.e. counter-clockwise as far as it will go when looking at it from the front of the engine -
? is that correct position

cd 31 engine problem

Re: cd 31 engine problem
Len, If you've got the Universal engine that is correct. When it's closed the decompression lever is horizontal or parallel to the top of the engine. It's on a spring so that to open it you have to force it against the spring and when you let go it snaps shut. Unless you've got a remote wire attached to it or something it's always shut. But you will know right away when you crank it. With the lever open the engine will spin very fast when cranking and, of course, never start. With the lever closed it cranks at the normal speed and will start in half a second if the glow plugs are hot. If you've got some other engine disregard all of the above. Don't keep cranking if it doesn't start right away. Find out what's wrong and the place to start is always with the fuel filter(s)and bleeding the line to remove air bubbles. These are the most common problems. The engine doesn't have to be running to bleed the lines. The electric fuel pump will circulate the fuel as long as the ignition is onlen wrote: thanks to all - engine is running at this point and hopefully will be ok - i am skittish about it and want to make sure decompression lever is in the right position - it is down, i.e. counter-clockwise as far as it will go when looking at it from the front of the engine -
