Metal Corrosion Prevention

Post by MARK RUHNKE »

Hello, I am looking to find out what the compound is that the Cape Dory Builders put on the ferrous metal plates (below deck)to prevent rusting?

I have fabricated a metal bracket that I am using to install a bearing on the top of my rudder post (1977 CD30K). If anyone wants the drawings for this bracket let me know.....Thanks.

It appears to me that CD used a red oxide primer. On a new ferrous bracket I would use Zinc Chromate not the "dichromate", there is a difference. Another couple of options I might use would be a typical epoxy primer or a urethane primer such as POR 15, which is incredible stuff but you would have to mail order it.
