Be careful about rafting up in Long Cove

Post by Terry »

My husband and I sailed to Long Cove last year in company with another CD. We usually raft up, but didn't there and we were glad we didn't. It is a very active spot and we were rolled on our beam ends by working boats and pleasure craft. Be careful. Our boats would have suffered much damage had we been rafted.

Dear Terry, thank you for reminding us, once again that we must aways be aware of our suroundings. An old salt taught me ,after a few failed attempts the art of rafting up.
If done correctly, rafted up with bow and stern breast lines, and spring lines between each boat, the spring lines if set corectly should work to keep the two boats apart with little or no pressure on the fenders placed between the two boats. The heaviest boat bieing the anchor vessal.Masts should also be staggered if possible to prevent fouling of rigging in a heavy roll. The Hand book of sailing by Bob Bond; New York. Alfred A knope 1989, shows all forms of docking and rafting that i'm sure we all need to brush up on once in a while, including yours truly. Just hate to mess up that perfect paint job.
Thanks BobPaterson

Was the rolling caused by boats in Long Cove or were their wakes washing in thru the entrance? Also, was it a constant thing all day long or just in the morning and evening when the lobster boats were checking their traps?

Thanks,
Mike Thorpe

We got waked by a powerboater in a hurry to get a "good spot" (it is all good in long cove), and we were severely waked by a fishing boat. There are not many traps in Long Cove, and I have always found the lobsterboats to be considerate. In general, no matter how well you raft, if a 35ft. powerboat goes by a half throttle (because they think it leaves less of a wake?!), you are in for some bumping and grinding. No wakes washed in through the entrance, it was just people being clueless.
