I am looking for an answer about the shear stripe on my CD 27, was there one from the factory or is it something that came about later. I have seen several Cape Dorys with a stripe about 6" or so down from the toe rail with an arrow at each end and the letters CD at the stern. I like the way this looks and would like to add it to my boat, does anyboby have a picture or some idea of the size and the location of the stripes and letters. Thanks Ken

Re: Shear stripe
For what it's worth:
Our beloved 1979 27CD, TIA MARI, had no such stripe (best referred to as a "cove stripe" I believe).
RESPITE, out 1986 330CD, does have the stripe & such.
Best wishes,

Re: Shear stripe
I'm repainting my newly purchased CD31 (#18) and it did not have a cove stripe, but have seen other CD's with it & it looks great. Since there is no "cove" on my boat it would just be a stripe, but I would like to have the cd in the stripe. Maybe someone can come up with a place to get the logo.Ken Schwinger wrote: I am looking for an answer about the shear stripe on my CD 27, was there one from the factory or is it something that came about later. Re: Shear stripe
If memory serves, it should be 58 of an inch on your boat. It wasn't quite six inches down though. more like four and a half or five. The cd's can be made up by anyone that does vinyl lettering. The way to do it is, you take a piece of wood with a hole in it for a pencil and run it under your rub rail. It's much easier with a line to go by! If you use plastic tape be sure and check if it has a clear film over it, failing to remove the film will cause it to fail in short order.Ken Schwinger wrote: I am looking for an answer about the shear stripe on my CD 27, was there one from the factory or is it something that came about later. Re: Shear stripe
I ordered chocolate brown striping tape from West Marine last year and 3/4" was too wide for my taste. 5/8" is the right width. If you have access to a pc, play with some Word fonts to get the "CD" of a size and style that you're looking for, print out for a stencil, and use an X-acto knife to cut out the letters. When you put on the tape per others' advice here, be sure to clean topsides with acetone prior to taping. This tape will then last a long time!.
