......applying a finish like Cetol or Armada or Varnish?
The reason for the question is this. My interior has had many years of hand rubbed oiling. Looks great. Except some of the high wear areas, like the galley, get "dry" quickly. I am considering some sort of satin finish or rubbed effect varnish.
I really don't want to bleach out all the old oil. Hoping to just lightly sand and coat. Is this just wishfull thinking ?????
Looking forward to your suggestions.......

Hi John,
Not necessarily. Remember that the cetol or in fact, satin varnish are both oil based products, so they would be compatible fundamentally. Now, depending on how wet with oil the wood is, you will get a varying amount of penetration of the new finsih.
Why not let the wood go for say this spring and summer, allowing it to dry out more (if you feel it is to wet) then do a light fine sanding..100 grit, no finer. Vacuum it off, then wait 30 minutes and then tack rag it well. Follow immediately with the finish of choice.
We switched to a satin varnish on the interior wood, and it looks very nice. It looks as good as our wood did right after being oiled..with a shiny, closed grain surface, and a depth to the finish that was impressive. Satin varnish will duplicate that effect quite well. Rubbed effect varnish was too flat for us.
Hope this helps..have fun!
