CD 28 Bimini/Dodger intstallation

Post by Tom Young »

Our CD 28 has a traveler off the end of the boom. We have a dodger which I am able to see over. I am wondering if anyone has mounted a bimini aft of the dodger. It has to end short of the mainsheet of course. I am thinking of adding one and having a panel made(clear) that zips to the dodger. I have seen this done on many boats but would appreciate experience with this boat. Also, mounted on the coaming or deck? Thanks

Tom, a bimini is a great idea, I'm building one right now myself
but consider something other than clear plastic, or just buy some
sun block 50. I have had 1" tube bent into shape and plan to mount
it to the out-side of the cockpit combing canted forward at same angle
of the main sheet with short struts from the stern pulpit for support.
My choice of matl. will be sunbrella.this should give me about 5 ft.
of covered area in the cockpit of my 28.

i have a similar situation on my cd26. i am making a panel to snap to the aft end on the dodger, then supported by a 1" pvc pipe set flying with port and stbd lines straddling the mainsheet, set up with quick snaps to a ring lashed on the backstay. i wont be able to look over the dodger and may have to disconnect it when tacking, but it is simple, cheap and readily stowed when not needed. it also avoids any new holes in the deck, which i detest.
