tabernacle for CD27

Post by Jim Stull »

Looking back thru the old posts, there had been some discussions about converting one of the larger CD's to the tabernacle mast support, (similar to the CD25's).
Has anyone done this yet. It appears that a sturdy pivoting fabrication could be made, (at least on the '27), to accept the factory step.

Just returned from my 2 months of misery in Michigan's UP. The weather here in SC is MUCH better for sailing. As far as a tabernacle for the CD27 mast.... We decided it would be safer to use a jin-pole to lift and lower the mast rather than pivot the mast on deck. It takes my wife and I about an hour to raise or lower our mast but we have had some practice.

If you would like particulars let me know and I'll see if I can scrape some sketches together.

well... at least after my fingers thaw out.

Hi Paul
As you know, I very much respect your design capabilities. Could you tell me why you decided on the gin pole vs a bipod. We built a bipod for our CD25 and like the total control it provides. However it obviously would require a fabricated tabernacle instead of the fixed mount. Was this the downside to this scheme?
PS We still have a "winter wonderland" here.
Thanks much.
Jim

I think you are right that the bipod and hinge at the mast base would provide for more control than the setup I use. The lifting point on my setup is at the spreader base (only convenient spot). Unfortunately, with my big radar reflector bolted 3/4 up the mast, the mast is slightly top heavy. This requires diligence on my part to guide the mast base (hold it down and steer) as Janet cranks on the winch to lift the whole works up. Obviously, if I were to let go of the mast base mid-hoist, we woulds have quite a mess on our hands.

My brotherinlaw and I tried several iterations of throw together systems to find what worked best. My perception of how a particular system worked may have been skewed since some of the apparatus we came up with for testing purposes were quite flimsy to say the least. It's a wonder both of us were not killed several times over as we watched the various planks and cables and blocks bend and wiggle overhead.

We did try a bipod arrangement but rejected it because of the calculated weight of the bipod itself (too dificult to manage during setup/teardown). As you pointed out, this also required a modification to the mast step. The difficulty in placing the mast so far aft to get the mast hinge hooked up was the clincher though. The only way I could figure to do that was to use some sort of lifting pole that a 2nd person would use from the ground behind the boat (while on the trailer) to support the top of the mast while walking it back. I think you realize the height we are talking about now that you have seen the CD27 on the trailer. Maybe hinging from the front might be the way to go (maybe you could walk on the truck or something to support the top of the mast as you walked it forward.

I'm not saying the gin-pole is the way to, but it seemed the most pratical at the time. My heart still pounds a bit harder when the mast it most of the way up, dangling from the ginpole with no shrouds connected.

Did I send you the pics of my setup?

Paul
