CD25 - winch replacements
This will be my last question, promise. I need to replace my sheet winches. The original barlow 15s are beyond hope. I have looked around a bit on the web and at "Strickly Sail Chicago", a great boat show held at Navy Pier last weekend. I am leaning towards the Anderson 10. Here my lack of experience surfaces again. The Anderson is a about half the price of Harken and some dealers tell me to stay away from Lewmar. Educate me please.

Dan,
I am not sure why dealers would tell you to stay away from Lewmar. Maybe the profit margins to the dealers are lower with Lewmar. I have Lewmars on my 25D and I have had no problem with them. They are easy to service and parts are readily available. Lewmar publishes a handy booklet, and it may be available on line as well, that will teach you how to do your own maintance on the winches. I was intimidated at first, however I taught myself how to do the cleaning and lubricating, and at this point I'd rather own Lewmars than any any other brand. Something you might consider is purchasing a pair of used winches. There are a number of used winch brokers. Bacon and Associates in Annapolis, MD would a good place to start.
Good luck! Bob Ohler

Re: CD25 - winch replacements
I have had experience with both the Lewmar and the Andersen and my experience is that both are good winches. The Andersen's are stainless steel, which I think is a plus. I would not get aluminum, and I don't like chrome. If you are going to replace get bigger winches than those you are replacing and get self tailers if you can afford them.

Dan:
I agree with Will on STailers and larger sizes. Two caveats for the 25; first, make sure you have room for your replacement winch on the winch pad. Second, if you like Lewmars (I am not familiar with Andersens, but understand they are excellent winches) the smallest ST they make is a 16. Assuming it will fit, the trade-off is two speed vs. one speed; the ST is single speed. Good luck.

Re: CD25 - winch replacements
On my CD 25 i purchased Lewmar Brass self tailing winches size 16 i think. They look beautiful and perform very well. The brass is a nice touch, goes well with brass port holes. While a bit pricey, I think they are worth it and I get compliments all the time.

Are you sure its brass? I suspect they are actually bronze.

Re: CD25 - winch replacements
Yes you are right bronze, not brass. Thanks for the correction
