Boom Vang for CD Typhoon?

Boom Vang for CD Typhoon?
Does a Typhoon equipped with a boom vang handle better offwind than one without? I have a '71 Typhoon and I'm wondering if it is a good idea to add one. Comments will be appreciated. Does anyone know where the hardware should be located on the boom and base of mast? Distances or angles?

Re: Boom Vang for CD Typhoon?
probably something you should not be without. on my '74 there is a small tang on the front side of the mast at the bottom. a 3/8 piece of nylon wraps around the mast and the ends are knotted. if you do not have this tang you would have to attach a bail at the base of the mast on the back side. on this piece of nylon is a very small becket block. there is a metal piece on the bottom of the boom with a slot that accepts one end of the vang which is wire with a round ball at the end. it is 31.5 inches from the front end of the boom or 34 inches from the back side of the mast. if you do not have this metal piece on your boom you would have to attach a bail to the boom for one end of the vang. my vang which i assume is original equipment has the above mentioned wire end attached to a two-part block and the other end has a two-part block with a jam cleat molded as part of the block construction. any pre-made vang will work or you can build one yourself. most vangs for racing dinghies (ex. laser) should be heavy enough for the ty. just be sure to have swivels at each attachment point on the mast and boom. you will see a big improvement in your downwind sailing from a beam reach to dead downwind.

Re: Boom Vang for CD Typhoon?
Jim:
A boom vang is a least expensive piece of "go fast" equipment you can add to your boat. I would highly recommend adding one. If you have a Typhoon with roller reefing, you would need to change to jiffy reefing before adding a vang. Changing to jiffy reefing would be a desireable upgrade in any case.
I have an instruction sheet that was prepared by Spartan Marine which shows the mounting dimensions, lists the Spartan part numbers of the bails and has installation instructions for all CD's, from Ty to CD-36. I would be happy to send or fax you a copy, just email me directly. Or anyone else who would like a copy.

Tony -
I'd love a copy as well. Also, another question: I have roller reefing on my main, but use the reef points for traditional reefing instead. I think this means I could install the boom vang with my current gooseneck and boom. Agreed?

Re: Boom Vang for CD Typhoon?
How many of you guys have a fixed gooseneck, and how many have a sliding one like I do?
Has anyone considered double blocks (side by side) instead of fiddle blocks?

Re: Boom Vang for CD Typhoon?
Jim-As noted a boom vang is a useful upgrade. It will really help flatten the main off the wind. I mounted a padeye in the slot below the sheave box on the aft side of the mast. Put bolts, washers and nylock nuts on the padeye and with a little jiggling you can slip the washers and nuts down that slot. There's a photo on my site-www.geocities.com/Regalo82/ I mounted a bail on the boom-a Sheaffer bail will work if bent just a little bit. West Marine has a nice vang with the lines and blocks made up that I use.

Vang Parts
I bought one at the end of last summer and am installing it this spring. I had to order most of the parts from schaefer. Believe me, you'll be so much happier sailing with it!
Vang Kit: part 35-20
Boom Bail: part 90-01
Small curved base padeye from Ronstan: part ??
You'll also need a little connector between the bail and top fiddle block (doesn't swivel).

Re: Boom Vang for CD Typhoon?
sliding gooseneck.
my vang is two fiddle blocks but doubles would add more purchase. many times i assist the vang with some hand pressure on the boom.

Re: Boom Vang for CD Typhoon?
Tony,
I'm seriously contemplating buying a TY daysailor from the guy that owns the yard where I keep a larger sailboat. It will compliment the old Bullseye I keep up in the 1000 Islands, and satisfy a desire I've had to own one of these boats for the past 20 yrs.
Having inspected the mast recently, it doesn't have a vang. I know very well the value of this simple item. I'd appreciate it very much if you could fax me the Spartan vang instructions. My fax nrb at work is 973 522 3485. If you could mark it to the attn of Chris Bell, I'll get it.
