remodelling cape dory's

Post by warren moore »

I am always amazed how so many people buy CD's, praise the boats, sailing characteristics, workmanship, etc. Praise the genius of Carl Alberg, and then rip apart the boat, remodelling it to fit their own pleasures. eg putting wheel steering in a CD28. Not that there is anything wrong with doing this, you buy a boat, you can do whatever you want. But at what point does a Cape Dory become a Cape Dory-Like boat. I look at my CD28 as a classic that represents a by-gone era of boat manufacturing that is no longer around, and try keep as close to Carl Alberg's design as possible. I suppose someday someone will post on this board," How can I remove the full keel on my CD25 and replace it with a swing keel for gunkholing". Just a thought to pass a winter day waiting for the next sailing season.

Warren,

Thank you for expressing something that has been bothering me for some time. I too feel that the Cape Dory is a classic vessel! I haven't and won't do anything to Hanalei that wasn't available from the factory originally. Yes, I did the first year add hot and cold pressure water to her, but that was available as an option from Cape Dory.

Some day, I figure someone will want to purchase a Cape Dory 30c that is as close to original as possible, and if at that time I am ready to sell Hanalei, well, she will be gone.

I also agree with you. You buy a boat and shell out that kind of money, well, you have the right to do anything you want to her, but there is the case for originallity. Thanks again, I remain your humble servant....

Dave,
I think its a "matter of degree". Original Cape Dorys didn't have headsail furling gear but almost everyone (who can afford to) puts in a furler. Progress and better technology has its place. I suppose wholesale structural change is more of what you are talking about but some changes make for a better boat and really compliment the CD's great design. Cape Dorys didn't come with a "Maxprop" either because probably they weren't invented yet, but does anyone feel that replacing a 2 bladed fixed prop with a Maxprop somehow "diminishes" Carl Alberg or his Cape Dorys??

warren,
me thinks you're on the edge, laddy! best get down to the sea or at least a boat show, and lock the cabin up for the weekend.

Warren,

Hanalei came with roller furling on the jib. You are right, changes that are for safety reasons and ease of use I think are OK, but major structural changes - - Nah! Hanalei still does have the original prop and other than the fact that she will never back down properly if ANYONE is watching, it works just fine.
