Several of us Volvo Penta MS4 transmission owners were involved in a
pretty intense discussion several months ago. I was just wondering if anyone had any additional information to share.
My local Volvo dealer,All Island Marine,http://www.allisland.com, also confirmed they do a great number of MS4 rebuilds. He also mentioned that the cost of the rebuild may be considerably less if the units are brought in for service at the first sign of shifting problems.

Any MS4 Transmission Updates?

Re: Any MS4 Transmission Updates?
My MS4A comes out of the boat very soon (was only hauled this week), until it is on the bench I don't know how much rework will be needed. I bought an additional MS4A that was replaced early (e.g. replaced before failure) to increase the number of options that I have. My slipmate will want to take proactive action on their MS4A before failure as well.
I think lots of dealers "do a great number of rebuilds". Until this fall, I didn't know how pervasive the problem was. Even 165HP Cape Dory 28 have had MS4A problems.
I am trying to evaluate potential rebuilders; any comments about All Island Marine?

I have personally only used All Island Marine for parts. They are one of the largest suppliers of Volvo Penta parts in the Long Island and New York areas. There was a one page write up on them in the October 1995 issue of Offshore Magazine's Marina Profile section which states they specialize in engine work and have three full time mechanics on staff.
I would appreciate if you let me know how your search goes since I'm sure my MS4's will need to be rebuilt eventually also.
