new sails/sail weight

Post by steve marcottr »

I've started looking into buying a new main this winter... If anyone has words of warning/caution or recommendation- please pass them on... i've never done this before and any and all advice is appreciated. (i.e. recommended dacron weight?)

Thanks again.

We've ordered a new loose footed main and reefing staysail for our CD30c. The loose footed main is a newer consideration for me, as is partial full batttens (upper two to give shape to an area that is likely to fall off and loose it's shape). The advantage is that the loose footed main is very easy to fine adjust between the full position and the single reefed position, making an intermediate setting possible. We have three reefs installed. Downwind, the sail forms a better shaped pocket to trap air without it bleeding off the bottom of the sail. This is done by adjusting a lower leech line. The bottom of the sail has a 'bonnet' on the bottom, in that there is asection of the sail that overlaps the boom slightly, hanging down below it a bit.
We got the best price from UK Sails, who I believe are a combination of the old Ulmer sails and Kolius sales. Since we got 17 years on the original Ulmer sails, I gave UK the first look, and compared them to Sobstad, Hood, and North sails. Hood was over $1000 more for the same sails.

You asked about sail weights. Our main is 7.5 oz. high modulus dacron, crosscut construction, and the staysail is 7.0 oz. All 4 sailmakers bid the same weight cloth and identical features, such as leather reinforcement at the cringles and corners, two rows of triple stitching, CD emblem, leech lines on leech and foot, full battens for top two battens, all-slip low friction sail slides, and all hardware needed. Both sails for $2050.

Cheers!
