I have a CD 28 with a 100hp Westerbeke and I'm thinking of 200Hp to achieve approx 13kts cruising. I've looked at Cummings and Yanmar although the latter is a 4 cylinder which might not be as smooth as a 6. Does anyone have a suggestion on a model?

Let's see now...
1) Your 200HP goes 13kts with a roar of noise and a big fuel bill.
2) I sail at 6kts with quiet and beauty, at no cost at all, or occasionally power at 6kts with a murmuring 12HP diesel that burns a quart an hour.
CONCLUSION: Why have 7 more kts? I'll keep enjoying my CD-30 Ketch.

I always knew it might come to this.....
Be careful, you never know if your parents sailed or motored.

Bill:
I have a CD 28 Open with a 220 HP Cummins straight 6 diesel. She cruises easily at 16 knots, 7 GPH. She will do about 22 knots wide open, but who needs it? The prop is a 20X20 four-blade.
The Cummins replaced her original 200 HP Volvo which was apparently trashed by the original owner.
A friend of mine recently repowered his 28 foot downeast powerboat from a Crusader gasoline V8 to the Yanmar 4, and he is quite happy;
I have heard no complaints about vibration, but the straight 6 is inherently smoother, no doubt.
If I can answer any further questions, fire away and I will do my best.

Aren't the CD trawlers displacement hulls, the max speed limited by waterline length not horsepower?Pete Asensio wrote: Bill:

Re: Diesel Upgrade Power Boats
The Volvo diesel , TAMD40B, 165 hp is a bulletproof engine and will cruise at 12 knots at 5 gph. The 200 hp replaced this engine, but the first year it was out, it smoked alot. I was told that this was corrected in the later models.William D. Thompson wrote: I have a CD 28 with a 100hp Westerbeke and I'm thinking of 200Hp to achieve approx 13kts cruising.
