I currently own a typhoon and am seriously considering a larger boat to do some family cruising. (My wife and 2 children ages 3 and 7). I am thinking of a boat in the 28 - 30 foot range. I have a couple of questions on the CD 28. I've never sailed in one. Any input in CD28 would be appreciated. The two I looked at were 78, 79.
- Is this boat large enough for a family of four to do cruising weekends, the longest being a week?
- Does the tiller get in the way of other people in the cockpit when sailing? I always thought of my next boat as having a wheel. Does anyone have (comfort) problems with a tiller?
- I sail out of Boston Harbor. Is this size boat big enough to sail the coasts of RI, MA, NH ME safely with my family?
Thanks

>>Is this boat large enough for a family of four to do cruising weekends, the longest being a week?<<
Absolutely. We cruse comfortably with the two of us plus a chocolate lab. The 28's not exactly a two couple boat, but would do fine as a family cruiser.

Sometimes. When we sail with friends, the pup goes to leeward with one friend and the rest of us to windward. You have to be aware of the tiller when coming about, but otherwise it's not a problem. A wheel is always in the way.

So do we, from Marina Bay. We've sailed to Gloucester and back, twice to Provincetown, lots to Scituate, to Plymouth, through the canal to Buzzards Bay, etc. Friends sailed their CD27 from Buzzards Bay to Maine and back this summer. You'll have plenty of boat for coastal cruising, and lots safer than many of today's production boats.

Re: Looking For CD28 Info
Mine is a 1977 and is still going fine. We have taken two summer long trips ( 8 weeks both times- one to Lake Ontario and the last one to Long Island Sound) on ours with my wife and our two daughters (10 and 12 years old). While not exactly roomy conditions we find it to be no problem whatsoever.Robert Melvin wrote: I currently own a typhoon and am seriously considering a larger boat to do some family cruising. I much prefer the tiller to the wheel. My tiller will stand up fairly straight and I can still steer the boat like this so I find there to be more room in the cockpit. The one big cockpit room eater we found was the original main sheet configuration. The sheets were always in the cockpit until we switched to a cabin top traveler system.Robert Melvin wrote: - Does the tiller get in the way of other people in the cockpit when sailing? I believe you could safely sail just about anywhere in this boatRobert Melvin wrote: - I sail out of Boston Harbor. Is this size boat big enough to sail the coasts of RI, MA, NH ME safely with my family?
Thanks
Good Luck if you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask.
